You'd be hard-pressed to find two local music acts that have had a better 2004 than Rogue Waveand Kelley Stoltz. It seems like only a year ago that we profiled Zach Rogue's quartet in these pages -- and as a matter of fact, it was. Since then, the warm fuzzy pop-rock band has signed to Sub Pop, toured the country opening for groups like Death Cab for Cutie and the Shins, and gained widespread acclaim, as evidenced by the appearance of Rogue Wave's Out of the Shadow on a number of critics' top 10 lists. Then there's the tireless Stoltz, who didn't put out a record in 2004, but who nevertheless played to packed houses almost every week. Whether he had a full band behind him or just an acoustic guitar in his hands, he electrified whatever venue he graced. So it comes as no surprise that word has spread outside the Bay Area: The singer/songwriter has played on stages from Seattle to Melbourne this year, and at least one indie-major that we know of is whispering his name around the office. Café Du Nord is set to unbutton its shirt and let loose on New Year's Eve with the help of two of the Bay Area's best electro-disco bands. Oakland's Lovemakers and San Francisco's Paradise Boyscome packed with irresistibly cute songs ripe for midnight make-out sessions; the former boasts the sexy synergy of vocalists Lisa Light and Scott Blonde (and a recent signing to Interscope, with a major-label debut due out in 2005), while the latter is our city's answer to the Scissor Sisters (but slightly less gay). Providing the right funk injections (both classic and modern) to rev up the night will be the evening's DJ, the Paradise Boys' own Jefrodisiac.
