Surely every city dweller has a favorite piece of illegal public artwork. So you can't make it to the Pro Bowl -- at least San Francisco's East West Shrine Game doesn't require airfare to Honolulu. In its 80 years the post-season collegiate all-star football game has earned its own bragging rights with a long history of distinguished players, including John Elway and former President Gerald Ford. East West is also a profitable fund-raising event for the nationwide Shriners Hospitals for Children, which provide free orthopedic, burn, and spinal cord care to kids.
This year's match pits Oregon State coach Mike Riley's West Coast crew against Purdue University's Joe Tiller-led East Coast squad, with standout athletes on both teams. Sure, it's a philanthropic venture, but that doesn't make the rivalry any less intense and sweaty.
