Kayaking for a cause

SAT 1/22The highlights of my 10th-grade summer-school gym stint (besides the cute bikini I wore) were the days when we'd pack our horny adolescent bodies into kayaks for some fun on the local river. I can't promise such coquettish pleasures on the "Marin Islands Kayak and Restoration" trip, but I can assure you you'll be rowing your boat for a much better cause. You'll spend an afternoon helping to restore the native habitat of this bee-you-ti-ful region and also get a chance to check out a green place that's usually off-limits to the public because of its thriving yet delicate heron rookery. Get your paddle on at 9 a.m. at the Loch Lomond Marina, 110 Loch Lomond (at San Pedro), San Rafael. Participation is $45-55 and preregistration is required; call (510) 452-9261 or visit www.savesfbay.org.

On the Run

SAT 1/22

The only thing standing between you and a rock-hard physique is your own unwillingness to get up off the sofa and start working out. But that requires a daily commitment many of us are too lazy to undertake. One possible aid: the buddy system. If urban sidewalk sprinting is your thing, the nonprofit San Francisco Road Runners Club, which offers weekly runs and race/marathon training programs, might help you keep your motivation on track. Check the group out today with a trial jog at 7:15 a.m. that begins at the Sports Basement, 610 Mason (at Sutter), S.F. Participating is free; call 273-5731 or visit www.sfrrc.org.

Meet Nia
A new way to sweat

SUN 1/23

Aerobic exercise is great for the heart but hard on the joints. Tai chi and yoga improve flexibility and relaxation but aren't likely to get your heart rate pumping in the cardiovascular zone. And martial arts and many dance styles have a steep learning curve. How to reconcile the pros and cons of each type of movement? The answer for some exercise enthusiasts is the Nia Technique, a blend of martial arts, dance, and yoga invented by a couple of sleek Oregonians whose creation has been making fitness magazine headlines of late. See what all the fuss is about at the "Nia Dance Jam & Workshop," an introductory class followed by an optional vegetarian lunch and an additional workshop, all starting at 11 a.m. at the One Taste Urban Retreat Center, 1074 Folsom (at Seventh Street), S.F. Admission is $13-25; call 341-5604 or visit www.onetastesf.com.
