For Bay Area hip hop fans, a new album from Opio is akin to receiving a call from a long-lost friend: surprising yet satisfying. In addition to his involvement in the vaunted Hieroglyphics ensemble, Opio has lent his distinct, nasal flow to some of the area's biggest anthems, including Souls of Mischief's quintessential "'93 Till Infinity." With Triangulation Station, he reasserts his status as one of our premier MCs. It's obvious that he has politics on his mind as he rails against the ills of "tricknology" and declares, on "What's Wrong With This Picture," that it's "So easy to regurgitate the trash that they feeding you/ Perverting and distorting the truth through the mass media." Opio's production is as playful and accessible as his lyrics are serious and polemic. From the loopy circus funk of "Viva Main Vein" to the loose rec-room jam of "Take My Chance," Opio makes a case that he's just as good behind the boards as he is on the mike. Triangulation Stationis yet another strong addition from the Hieroglyphics crew.
