"Big Black" Matt Goias spins eclectic electro at "Daft Cunt"; Louie Vega stops "Remedy" with his Afro-Latin house

Louie Vega's body-movin' Afro-Latin house music, the beats he makes both on his own and with partner Kenny "Dope" Gonzalez as Masters at Work, has long been a San Francisco favorite. He's a born artist with music running through the bloodlines of his family: His uncle was the late salsa singer Hector Lavoe, while his father (Louie Vega Sr.) is renowned on the sax. DJs still rely on material from Vega Jr.'s 2004 album Elements of Life, while he recently released a remix album of those songs to provide further dance-floor fuel. It's not often that we have a genuine Svengali in the midst of local clubland, but the imminent appearance of New York's "Big Black" Matt Goiasshould temporarily change that. Of course, "Big Black" isn't yet as well known as, say, Maurice Starr (who demonstrated a love of the "new" by gluing together both New Edition and New Kids on the Block in the '80s), but perhaps neither is Fannypack, the bass-lovin' young girl group that Goias writes for and helped put together. Signed to Tommy Boy Records, Fannypack is about to bring out its sophomore album, See You Next Tuesday, but you can catch "Big Black" on the decks this week, when he'll be joined by Sacramento club DJs Shaun Slaughter ("Vicious," "FUCK," "Lipstick") and Jon ("Vicious," "FUCK") and local EmDee ("Neon").
