Jennifer Lopez

Rebirth

Jennifer Lopez has finally made an album that is as hot as she is. "Cherry Pie" is as lyrically inane as anything she's ever written ("Dear Ben," anyone?), but it's silly like a fox or, more accurately, like Janet Jackson, all sexy giggles and summer days -- I swear to God it smells like sunscreen and Coca-Cola. Similarly, Jen's vocals on tracks like "Get Right" are bland at best, but who cares when they're busy strutting around with a bunch of sassy funk horns and a beat designed for some good old-fashioned J. Lo-video booty-shakin'? Even the cheesy ballad-type songs about her love life ("I, Love") and the embarrassing "No, really, I'm still down" tracks ("Hold You Down," featuring Fat Joe) come off as endearing and fun. Lopez's talent is for being hot, for imbuing herself and whatever she does (be it movies, music, or her clothing line) with an infectious allure, sometimes to a fault (did we really need the J. Lo fragrance?). It's not an ability to be disparaged. After a couple of years spent dangerously veering toward mediocrity, Lopez sizzles with Rebirth.
