"You're no poem once you open your mouth," Inara George sings on her recently released debut. George herself, however, is all poetry on All Rise, an album brimming with songs whose lyrics sound like poems set to melody, almost as an afterthought. Musically, the acoustic guitar arpeggios on "All Rise" recall a carefree, early-'70s vibe -- think Simon & Garfunkel -- like a sonic imprint from George's upbringing in hippie Topanga Canyon (Dad was Little Feat slide guitarist Lowell George). Inara George didn't get into music until college, when she started two bands (Lode and Merrick) before going solo a few years ago. For all the record's musical '70s throwbacks, George's airy vocal has more in common with those of contemporaries like Fiona Apple or Metric's Emily Haines. No coincidence, considering George's producer and co-writer, Michael Andrews (the Greyboy All-Star turned Donnie Darko composer and the genius behind Gary Jules' "Mad World" cover), was also lead knob-twister on Metric's latest record. The Master Musicians of Bukkake are from Seattle. They dress all crazy-wild and unload gobs 'n' gobs of crudely twisted free-noise and outer-limits panic-rock, which are, oddly enough, guided by their genuine reverence for world music. So, it makes total sense that this dude, Alan Bishop, released their new disc on his Abduction imprint. Bishop, see, is a member of the Seattle band Sun City Girls; they are "out there," too. But, he is also a real-deal world traveler and independent scholar recording sounds and images of distant lands and far-off cultures and releasing them on his other imprint, Sublime Frequencies. Thus, be prepared when this whole Northwest freak-scene invades our city for an entire weekend.
