MF Doom

Live From Planet X

Spitting a slipstream of rearranged clichés, comic-culture allusions, and schizoid sci-fi references, MF Doom has spent the past two years ruling the underground hip hop ghetto with an iron mask (i.e., the one he's always wearing). He puts out classic albums -- Venomous Villain, Take Me to Your Leader, MMMM...Food, and Madvillainy -- quicker than most MCs can say, "Another Shandon, bee-yatch." And while Live From Planet X provides a nice footnote to the above releases, it does little else. Doom's performance here is competent enough as he seamlessly roams from "hit" to "hit" with decent breath control and enunciation, and considering the density and quantity of his lyrics, this is much more of a feat than you would imagine. But then again, it's only a competent performance: Few songs deviate from this artist's well-established template, and the low mix and Doom's occasional lapses in flow ensure that there aren't any standout moments here. Planet X is strictly for the die-hard fans.
