Best DivePublished on May 11, 2005Gyro King 25 Grove (at Larkin), 621-8313 The unprepossessing room -- dominated by an open grill and a glass-fronted refrigerated case containing salads -- belies the fresh and exciting Middle Eastern fare on offer here. You order at the counter, grab a drink and silverware, and find a seat at one of the 10 not very comfy tables, where a server will bring you your delicious food. We love the appetizer combo plate, which includes excellent hummus, baba ghanouj, chunky eggplant salad, and the fiery ezme made with mashed tomatoes, walnuts, parsley, onions, and hot red pepper sauce. The Gyro King combo grill is another bargain: chicken and lamb shish kebab, aduna (fresh minced lamb sausage), kofte (fresh ground beef sausage), two kinds of rice, and salad -- enough for two at $12.95. Try the stuffed vegetable or meat pies, and the lahmacun (aka Armenian pizza). We're only sorry that the place closes at 10, or we'd drop by after the opera or the symphony right up the street.
