Best DJ Night

"Fallout"

Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell (at Van Ness), 861-2011, www.falloutsf.com

When it comes to throwing a great dance party, quality selections are far more important than superhuman DJ skills. That's why a user interface designer and an attorney are throwing the best DJ night in town, which takes places the third Saturday of every month from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. Designer Greg Morantz (DJ Rantz) and attorney Ken Sogabe (DJ Seijiro) understand that a ton of wicky-wack scratching and multigenre beat-matching don't make the crowds go wild. They know that people want to hear plenty of old classics (say, the Cure's "Boys Don't Cry") and nouveau chic hits (maybe Louis XIV's "Finding Out True Love Is Blind"), but with enough '60s soul and ska, '70s punk, and modern-day electro to keep things unpredictable. "Fallout" began as a weekly club at the Mission's tiny Doctor Bombay's (now Cama) in 2002, and then grew into a monthly dance party at Buzz 9 before blossoming into a full-on rager at Rickshaw Stop last year. The two organizers are even thinking of starting to book live bands -- which will likely be perfectly curated, just like the "Fallout" song selection.
