Best Shark Diving

Great White Adventures

875A Island, No. 338, Alameda, (510) 814-8256, www.greatwhiteadventures.com

Right now you're thinking, "But I'm not a scuba diver." Who cares! That's the fun of great white shark diving off the Farallon Islands -- you don't need a scuba license or training. All you need is the ability to suck a hookah, which is standard around here, and the wherewithal to complete a safety course on board. Then you're dumped like bait into a four-person cage and fed by an air hose trailing from the 54-foot New Superfish. After six seasons, the company claims an 80 percent success rate at attracting white sharks. And given the abundance of food in the form of fat 300-pound copulating elephant seals, there's a chance you'll see an attack, which Great White calls "an extremely dramatic event." Cage dives last 30 minutes each and take place multiple times throughout the day, providing many opportunities to see the action. One-day trips cost $775 per person and include breakfast, lunch, and beer; a $375 topside option is available for cowards. Tours run mid-September through mid-November.
