Funky house impresario Chris Fortier; "The Hottest Dyke March After Party" at the Rickshaw Stop

In the notoriously fickle corner of the international dance music scene that focuses on progressive house rumblings of the sort popularized by superstar U.K. DJs like Sasha and John Digweed, there's very little room for celebrating the achievements of Americans. A notable exception is New Yorkbased, Florida-reared Chris Fortier, who has been the main Yankee of note since the early '90s. Fortier garnered this hard-to-achieve status not only for his DJ, production, and remix skills, but also for his esteemed label, Fade Records, and his influential DJ record pool, Balance Promote Group, that's partly responsible for breaking club megahits. His tour, which traverses this country in addition to stopping in others such as Spain, Romania, Greece, and Germany, is in support of a new mix CD called Balance 007 (Stomp/EQ), Fortier's first mixed offering in four years and one that sees his dark and melodic sound growing immeasurably more funky. Catch him in San Francisco on Saturday, June 25, at 111 Minna; call 974-1719 or visit www.111minnagallery.com for more info. -- Tamara Palmer

It seems that a cantankerous group in the Valencia corridor tried purging Dolores Park of the perfectly tasteless and altogether important Dyke March. Fortunately, at least this year, the parade route remains intact. So, ladies, after exposing your drum-circle beats and floppy tits to the dainty foodies at Delfina and Tartine Bakery, head on over to Hayes Valley for "The Hottest Dyke March After Party." Here, Rebel Girl DJs China G and WaxMaster C will pump out new wave, electro, indie rock, hip hop, and '80s hits (think taste-tested-and-approved club favorites) for a dance floor full of gals and queers of all genders. A mere $7 cover charge will also get you free T-shirts, fresh new panties, and an entry in a schwag-bag giveaway. The fun starts at 9 p.m. this Saturday, June 25, at the Rickshaw Stop; call 861-2011 or visit www.rickshawstop.com for more info. -- Brock Keeling
