Kinski

With unprecedented candor for a music critic, I'm going to admit that I don't know much about the kind of music Kinski plays. Those of you well versed in the language of space rock, post-rock, whatever, are undoubtedly already aware of the myriad ways Kinski can be heartily congratulated/damned for the manner in which it pays tribute to/rips off bands like Mogwai and Jessamine. You people don't need me. For the rest of us dummies, I will now list for you what I thought was neat-o and what kind of sucked on Alpine Static.

Kind of Sucky: So many songs of the churning, sludgy variety that it starts to feel like Kinski's wheels are just stuck and spinning mud everywhere; an entire minute spent solely on onechord (no drums, nothing) at the end of "Hot Stenographer" (actually, this is so ridiculously minimalist, so unabashedly obnoxious, that it's almost entertaining -- almost).

Neat-O:"Waka Nusa," a slow, sweet autumn day of a song; these little repeated guitar trills at multiple pitch levels that open "Edge Set" like a chorus of gossipy bullfrogs; a few pretty fantastic song titles -- "Hot Stenographer," "The Wives of Artie Shaw," "All Your Kids Have Turned to Static."

There. Now it's time to go back to watching reruns of Becker.
