Mobius Band

The Loving Sounds of Static

There's an urgency missing from The Loving Sounds of Static, the debut full-length from the Brooklyn (via small-town Massachusetts) electro-pop trio Mobius Band. Gone is the immediate dose of gooey melody that made the band's City vs. Country EP such a swift kick in the pants. Here instead, amid the warm alignment of electronic burps and moping guitars, is a group now concerned with slower seductions, with moods that take several songs to reveal themselves. It's apt then that much of the record is about growing up ("I'll admit I once had hope/ But I was smoking lots of dope/ And it's just all a part of getting older," sings Ben Sterling on "Twilight"), because, according to the band, graduating into adulthood means trading quick-fix joy rides for bleak realism or, in the case of Loving Sounds, easy pop hooks for an experienced lover's patient master plan. Prettier snapshots of life's bleakness, like the ones found here, are few and far between.
