A contemporary of fellow underground hip-hoppers Zion I and Crown City Rockers, Bay Area crew Psychokinetics has been rocking stages and dropping eclectic sounds for a solid decade. Filled with guest spots from members of those outfits and other luminaries, the group's sophomore full-length forgoes past experiments with drum 'n' bass and downtempo to embrace more straightforward beats while retaining a sense of adventurousness. After the electro thump of opening dance-floor affirmation "Feeldismusik," MCs Spidey and Celsius 7 thread together cerebral battle rhymes, social commentary, and soul-searching introspection over several tunes with a late-night, freestyle-cipher vibe. The album's energy level spikes midway through with "Approach," a track that creatively grafts the opening guitar from AC/DC's "For Those About to Rock" onto a pulsing keyboard bass line and the rappers' infectious, singsong delivery. Principal producers DJ Denizen and the Vapor Child maintain the momentum through the funk-laced beats of "Disky Refund," but it's the MCs' vivid storytelling and self-deprecating pickup-line duel on the equally bumping "Done" that makes for entertaining repeat listens. Even if things get too sensitive and syrupy on the confessional closer, "Under the Sun," Seven League Boots spotlights Psychokinetics as yet another local product the bay can be proud to call its own.
