T. Raumschmiere's punk rock techno and Tha Alkaholiks' boisterous hip hop

Berlin's T. Raumschmiere, aka producer Marco Haas, operates an eclectic record label called Shitkatapult. The label name happens to be a great term to describe the upfront, techno-punk approach to music that he unleashes on albums such as his most recent, Blitzkrieg Pop. Oddly enough, it's Haas' most accessible work to date -- he takes the "pop" part of the equation seriously on songs like "A Very Loud Lullaby," on which singer Sandra Nasic sounds almost like the '80s metal crooners of Heart or Vixen -- but that's not to say you should expect timidity from Haas onstage. In sharp contrast to many of Berlin's minimal techno artists who have appeared locally in recent years, Haas is an outgoing performer, sure to be one of that city's most engaging entertainers to play here in a while. To wit: A lot of international electronic artists come to S.F. to DJ, but T. Raumschmiere will do it up with a raging live band when he touches down on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Mezzanine; call 625-8880 or visit www.mezzaninesf.com for more info.

Their protégé Xzibit ended up with all the fame, pimping rides as he does, and Snoop Dogg and Cypress Hill get all the credit for being SoCal's biggest party rappers with their odes to weed, but L.A.'s Tha Alkaholiks (the trio of Tash, E-Swift, and J-Ro) are still underground legends in the West Coast hip hop scene. Best known for their '93 hit "Make Room" ("Make room for the crew with beats that thump!"), their appeal extends to both gangsters and suburbanites. They've always been fun and boisterous as they celebrate the joys of drinking, but they are never so corny as to lose their street edge. The group will soon release its first album in four years, the appropriately titled Firewater. Until then, sneak in some 40s and get your kicks with Tha 'Liks on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at the DNA Lounge; call 626-1409 or visit www.dnalounge.com for more info.
