We know what a lot of you do on Tuesdays: You head to the pub to indulge your obsessive nature at trivia night. For some people, answering questions is about the joy of obscure celebrities; others know everything there is to know about '70s music. Whatever the subject, it's good silly fun to grab a few friends and sit around squeezing your brains. City Guides knows this, and the great walking-tour organization also wants to get you off your tuchis while you're solving puzzles. The subject this afternoon is local history: During the annual Great Gold Rush Adventure scavenger hunt, teams of human bloodhounds will scurry all over the city, sleuthing like crazy. Use clues to find the elusive "blue words" that will eventually fill up the all-important answer sheet, and your team (naturally, there's a prize for "Most Creative Team Name") could become the new Gold Rush Adventure Champions! Along the way are street scenes to decode, costumed characters, and plenty of municipal tidbits. The search is on at 12:30 p.m. at Theatre 39 at Pier 39, 2 Beach (Beach & Embarcadero), S.F. Registration is $40-45; call 557-4266 or visit www.sfcityguides.org.

Labor Lenders
Give till you hurt

SAT 10/15

You've donated clothes to the Salvation Army, participated in an AIDS Walk, and dutifully attended all sorts of benefits. You have, clearly, a good soul. But if giving the most direct charitable contribution -- your labor -- has been a little slow in coming, perhaps you need a massively organized and attended affair (and maybe an event T-shirt) to bring out the best in you. That's where Hands On Bay Area Daycomes in, when you can join 2,500 volunteers to complete more than 75 projects -- from rebuilding playgrounds to fixing meals for the homeless to painting classrooms. It starts at 8 a.m. at various locations around the bay. Participation is free; register at www.handsonbayarea.org or call 541-9616.
