Get your fill of funk fundamentals and "Biscuits and Gravy," then head over to Ruby Skye for "Thanksgiving in Paris"

Those who are still hungry in their soul after their holiday feasting should head straight to the Mission District to sop up some "Biscuits and Gravy," a free party hosted by the Elbo Room this Friday, Nov. 25. Veteran local DJs Vinnie Esparza, Romanowski (whose last recorded effort, it bears mentioning, was called Party in My Pants), and Asti Spumanti are your hosts, serving up a world of funk fundamentals as well as crazy surprises from the lands of soul, hip hop, and beyond. Fun this free doesn't happen too terribly often; call 552-7788 or visit www.elbo.com for more info.

With its recent rioting, Paris isn't the most idyllic place right now. "Thanksgiving in Paris," on the other hand, sounds a bit more inviting, and it's right here in San Francisco. Headlining DJ Frenchy Le Freak hails from the South of France rather than the capital, but for our purposes that's close enough. Monsieur Le Freak came here on vacation about five years ago and, after casually playing French house records at Butter one night, landed a DJ residency there. He's since become a popular staple of the local house scene, and this event gives him -- and fellow French expat Pheeko Dubfunk -- the opportunity to offer S.F. a little dose of his homeland. For those who still want a touch of Yankee flavor, Le Freak'll be joined by DJ Chris Style, who deftly mixes house, R&B, and hip hop (and even does his own remixes of big urban hits), and Ras Cue, who fires up the hip hop and downtempo upstairs. Dance off the last of the turkey leftovers on Saturday, Nov. 26, at Ruby Skye; call 693-0777 or visit www.rubyskye.com for more info.

The DJ bar Anû bills itself as "a nocturnal refuge," which is some claim when you're on a crack-infested block like Sixth Street, but the bar's friendly atmosphere goes a long way toward fulfilling the promise. It's been known as a spot for checking out solid local talent, but Anû's also a nice place to catch some international guests. This week the monthly party "FunkyCozy" welcomes England's Damian Lazarus and Chile's Pier Bucci . Lazarus has a good sense of humor: He recently started a club night in London called "Stink" (with German minimal-techno overlord Michael Mayer) and garnered international praise for his electro-disco mix CD, Suck My Deck. He also runs the Crosstown Rebels label, for which Bucci throws down his own elegant take on techno. Lazarus will be DJing (but probably doesn't want you to suck his deck) while Bucci will perform a special live set on Saturday, Nov. 26; call 543-3505 or go to www.anu-bar.com for more info.
