Some women have an edge to their voices that sounds like a little girl's, but gravelly. Ella Fitzgerald had it; Kathleen Hanna has it; Loretta Lynn has it. It's gold, and no listener can resist it: It's sexy, earnest, and tough all at once. Suffrajett lead singer Simi has it, too, but she also has an amazing rock band behind her, one that includes former Liz Phair compadre Jason Chasko. Think Eagles of Death Metal meet the Supremes, and you're partway there. In addition to that voice (why does it sound so good when she's screaming?), Simi elicits descriptions like "Grace Jones meets Deborah Harry." Suffrajett opens for Bob Schneider at 8 p.m. at the Independent, 628 Divisadero (at Hayes), S.F. Admission is $15; call 771-1421 or visit www.independentsf.com.
