This starts as a drawling blues-rock album, with "Shark Fin Blues" sounding like the rock revival that you wish those early-'05 rawk hopefuls Black Mountain had pulled off -- but then it slowly drags you through a long night of drink, gore, and weighing whether to end it all. Gareth Liddiard, the frontman of this Australian quartet, is a genuine wretch, coming apart so steadily that as the album wears on, you can almost hear his teeth falling out. The music treats him with exactly enough severity, never overplaying its hand or hamming up the drama: The Drones don't use a severe mood as an excuse to skimp on the melodies, and the erupting guitars are as rewarding as the pain. This is dire -- but it's one of the most excruciatingly great rock records of '05.
