Anthrax and Willie Nelson in the same week? How will fans of both decide?

Remember when we had that anthrax scare after 9/11, and the band Anthrax made the news because its members were weighing whether they should change their name, and everyone said, "Wow, Anthrax is still together?" Well, it's four years later, they never caught the guy behind the poisoning -- and the fathers of rap-rock still tour. This time, it's a reunion of Joey Belladonna, Frank Bello, Charlie Benante, Scott Ian (recently seen on VH1's So Jewtastic), and Dan Spitz -- the lineup from 1987's Among the Living. That's the album your mom and dad were playing when the condom broke. And in case you thought these guys had forgotten the war, they're campaigning against the military's controversial policy on -- what else? -- anthrax vaccinations. After all, with an awesome name comes awesome responsibility. Hoof it over to the Pound-SF on Friday, Jan. 20, to take in the rock; call 826-5009 or visit www.poundsf.com for more info. -- Chris Dahlen

The Red Headed Stranger may be graying around the edges, but nothing short of death itself -- or possibly the IRS -- could stop Willie Nelson & Family from returning to San Francisco this month for their annual string of sold-out gigs at the Fillmore. The shows, featuring barn-burning, 2-1/2-hour sets bolstered by classics like "On the Road Again" and "Always on My Mind," have become a rite of winter for Nelson's Bay Area followers, and a dependable reminder that the deadline for Americans to file their yearly tax returns looms just around the corner. They're also proof that Nelson, despite his famously mellow stage presence, has lost none of his fiery passion as a live performer. The legendary troubadour will roll into town on Monday, Jan. 23, for the first night of a four-night stand at the Fillmore; call 346-6000 or visit www.thefillmore.com for more info.-- Rossiter Drake
