French hip hop producer Laurent "DJ Cam" Daumail hasn't issued a proper full-length album since his excellent 2003 excursion into future soul, Soulshine. He has tried to satisfy fans with an odds-and-sods compilation (Liquid Hip-Hop), a mix CD (My Playlist), and now a compilation of other artists remixing his tracks. With contributions from Thievery Corporation, DJ Premier, DJ Vadim, and many others, Revisited By should be a stellar release. Instead, the 13 remixes on it vary in quality, and range from Kenny Dope's bass-rattling take on "Success" to Bob Sinclar's flailing reinterpretation of "Espionage." Attica Blues' "Success" mix adds silky vocals from singer Roba El-Essawy; it's a thoughtful reworking of the original. Revisited Byis a curious but unessential release, and DJs and hip hop fans unacquainted with DJ Cam should either pick up Soulshineor wait for his next opus.
