New-school house vs. True Skool hip hop

Few would recognize New York house music DJ Roger Sanchez on the streets of San Francisco, but it's a different story in places like Macedonia and the notorious Spanish party isle of Ibiza. Throughout Europe, Sanchez is one of America's most popular and well-paid DJ exports. Since releasing his first single in 1990 as Underground Solution, he's produced and favored tunes displaying a solid shuffle and a strong palette of R&B vocals (male and female). His weekly syndicated radio show Release Yourself is broadcast from the U.S. to Egypt (and can be streamed on Sanchez' Web site, www.releaseyourself.com). Since he often features sets recorded live in various clubs, the show is a good way to get an idea of the pace and style he lays down on the dancefloor. Ever a champion of new artists, expect to hear a lot of unfamiliar yet effectively booty-shaking sounds on the forefront of the house revolution when Sanchez touches down on Thursday, April 6, at Ruby Skye. Admission starts at $10; call 693-0777 or visit www.rubyskye.com for more info.

True Skool is a consistent force behind quality hip-hop events in the Bay Area, showcasing lineups that draw from top local and national talent. The first Friday of every month, True Skool takes over DNA Lounge for "The Big Payback," a party where the overarching theme is high value for a low price: Five bucks gets you entry to eight DJs spinning in two different rooms until 4 a.m. (well after most clubs stop their disco balls from spinning). Resident DJ Ren the Vinyl Archaeologist holds it down with his b-boy savvy mix of electrofunk (represented well on his independently released mix CD, Electric Kingdom). This month's installment brings DJs from popular area crews Local 1200, Oakland Faders, 4OneFunk, and Distortion 2 Static (the latter from the weekly hip hop TV program of the same name ). Take a trip through deep crates of funk, soul, and rap when "The Big Payback" returns on Friday, April 7 at DNA Lounge starting at 10 p.m. Call 626-1409 or go to www.dnalounge.com for more info.
