STANFORD

This handsomely restored neighborhood palace usually (but not always) screens pre-1960 Hollywood fare in the best available prints, with excellent projection. This springÕs series includes tributes to stylish director Vincente Minnelli and suave actor Ronald Colman.

WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Colman finds Shangra-La in Lost Horizon (Frank Capra, 1937; 7:30 p.m.) and loses his memory in Random Harvest (Mervyn LeRoy, 1942; 5:10, 9:40 p.m. ).

SATURDAY & SUNDAY: Two Colman silents, with live organ accompaniment by Dennis James. The Toilers (Tom Watts, U.K., 1919; Sat 7:30 p.m.; Sun 2 p.m. ), still listed as ÒlostÓ on IMDB, with the very young Colman leaving his fishing village for life in the big city. ColmanÕs big break came when he was cast opposite Lillian Gish as the saintly The White Sister (Henry King, 1923; Sat 8:30 p.m.; Sun 3 p.m. )

SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY: MinnelliÕs early musicals, the half-great, half-dated Cabin in the Sky (1943; 7:30 p.m. ) and the half-surreal, half-cloying Yolanda and the Thief (1945; 5:30, 9:20 p.m. ). Great dance numbers in both demand your attendance.

VICTORIA THEATRE

YERBA BUENA CENTER FOR THE ARTS

WEDNESDAY: California Newsreel presents a 35mm screening of a film from the Cape Verde islands, Fintar O Destino (Fernando Vendrell, 1998), about the struggles of a soccer coach. $7 7:30 p.m.

THURSDAY: Alert Homeland Security! Chris HabibÕs Wolf Eyes August 17, 2002 records a performance by the Òextreme noise terroristsÓ Wolf Eyes and will be played Òat a very high volume.Ó A short horror film about a bleeding man in a locked room, Haze (Shinya Tsukamoto, Japan, 2005) follows 7:30, 9:15 p.m.

SUNDAY (March 26): San Francisco Cinematheque screens three shorts by Allen Ross, ÒThe Grandfather TrilogyÓ (1979-81), documenting his relationship with the old man 7:30 p.m. Missing Allen (Christian Bauer, Germany, 2001) examines Allen RossÕ 1995 disappearance, still unsolved 8:50 p.m.

FILM NOTES

This Thursday the Danger and Despair Knitting Circle continues its series of 16mm rarities at 8 p.m. in an undisclosed downtown location. April 13Õs film is Hotewl Reserve (Victor Hanbery, 1946), with James Mason as a medical student suspected of being a spy.
