All hail the King and the Asian brigade

When he was a kid, King Britt’s mother would bring him to Sun Ra’s house in their Philadelphia hometown to hang out and experience the music. While Britt’s dancefloor-ready creations are far more accessible than that of Saturn’s most famous free jazz artist, the veteran DJ/producer has always channeled the cosmos into his multivalent take on electronic funk and soul. His busy international schedule usually includes at least one DJ appearance in SF a year, and this time he returns with a four-piece band for a rare live presentation. DJ Muro, one of Japan’s preeminent hip hop mixmasters, and 45 King, the imaginative, underrated DJ/producer behind Eminem’s “Stan,” Jay-Z’s “Hard Knock Life,” and Queen Latifah’s early career will also be on hand for the return of former monthly party “The Summit” on Friday, April 21, at Club Six. Really, you have to admire a club night that unabashedly bills itself as “a gay Asian paradise South of Market.” You can almost picture the scrappy Laotian house boy beckoning from Club Dragon while lounging under a palm tree, sporting little more than a pair of tighty whities; it’s just that wonderfully tacky. Much like the Tenderloin’s N’Touch, this fetish club night proudly, albeit tawdrily, caters to both the gay Asian male, um, genre, and the garden variety gentlemen who prefer Asians. But aside from its underlying socio-racial-sexual themes, the club night also provides an excellent alternative to the overwhelmingly congested 1015 Folsom scene just next door. Resident DJ Angel and this week’s guest DJ Phil B. spin safe, familiar, and dance floor-friendly hip hop and house beats.
