Say ciao to a new Sunday-night weekly

After spending well over a decade spinning records throughout the world and representing top European super-clubs like Renaissance and Cream, DJ/producer and undeniably gorgeous lady Sandra Collins may have gotten tired of constantly being pegged as a piece of eye candy — so she's running a little "Interference." With visual DJ (or VJ) Vello Virkhaus assisting her ability to manipulate imagery from her workstation, Collins is presenting her expertly mixed, high-energy trance and progressive house sounds with a new face. A screen displays everything from real-time computer-rendered images of Collins rocking the crowd to surreal landscapes that only an innovator like Virkhaus could conjure. The visuals work in time to the beats and the vibe of the audience, who really make this performance a participatory sport. "Interference" takes place Saturday, May 6, at Ruby Skye at 8 p.m. Admission is $15 advance; call 693-0777 or visit www.rubyskye.com for more info. Tamara Palmer

House music — a sound that's been tightly connected to the Bay Area since the late '80s and early '90s — has turned into a watered-down byproduct of its former self, and a staple at most clubs all the way from Bayview to the Marina. "Sphere" at Studio Z attempts to reinstate this city as the top spot for dance music by featuring quality tech-house grooves from top-shelf DJs and producers. Bringing in well-known international DJs Dia (Bologna, Italy) and Miro Dondini (Milan), this weekly focuses on straight-up techno and house that's a pleasure to hear booming from the speakers — not just easy derivative diva remixes that fly at other venues. The beats begin this (and every) Sunday, May 7, at Studio Z at 9 p.m. Admission is $5-$10; call 252-7100 or visit studioz.tv for more info. Brock Keeling
