Small Sails don't just create ambient electronic soundtracks; they perform them with correlating cinematic footage for the full audio-visual experience. The Portland four-piece dreams up twee laptop pop, incorporating computers, vibraphones, keyboards, and finger-picked guitars with live film loop mixes. Fans of like-minded souls the Books and Prefuse 73 will find cuddly tunes here, as the pastel-hued instrumentals float by with breezy ease. Small Sails perform on Thursday, July 13, at Hotel Utah at 9 p.m. Admission is $6; call 546-6300 or visit www.thehotelutahsaloon.com for more info. — Jennifer Maerz

Everything's better when it's done the French way — swapping spit, frying potatoes, and celebrating national holidays all come to mind. France commemorates the storming of the Bastille every July 14, and Francophiles everywhere can get down to vintage Parisian-style icons at Bardot a Go Go , the Rickshaw's annual Bastille Day disco. DJs Brother Grimm and Cali Kid transport your ears overseas as they spin French-, electro-, and mod pop tracks spanning from Serge to more current "shagadelic" hits. Give the party your best pussycat pout on Friday, July 14, when Bardot a Go Go hits the Rickshaw Stop at 9 p.m. Admission is $10; call 861-2011 or visit www.rickshawstop.com for more info.— J.M.

Across the street from the despicable-looking Hall of Justice and nestled in our city's Bail Bond Borough stands a club hosting a shock of diverse music that overlaps with its 1930s deco elegance. That jolt of optimism and slightly distressed swank comes from Catalyst Cocktails. And although the venue really is the perfect post-court-hearing place in which to down a tall pitcher after your baby daddy's fifth parole hearing turned into an absolute disaster, it's also gaining momentum as a place to hit come nightfall. One reason is DJ Jonboy. Bringing back "Dubalicious" from hiatus, he'll man the decks as well as the evening's overall score. Expect Jonboy and posse to deliver the breaks, tech house, a wee bit of electro house, and, of course, titular dub beats to a party-heavy, diverse crowd. DJs Simo & Gogi, Via Jay, Shabadoo, and the noted Mancub also spin. The night gets its ass in gear on Saturday, July 15, at 9 p.m. Admission is free; call 621-1722 or visit www.catalystcocktails.com for more info.— Brock Keeling
