Midwest marauders DJ Funk (Chicago) and DJ Assault (Detroit) go at the turntables hard and fast, dropping records with beats so insistent, it's hard to turn them down. Assault brings a tad more nastiness to his mixes, throwing hip-hop records on 45 to bring them to a techno pace, while Funk favors more of a jackhammer house style true to his origins. The Anticon crew is famous for going against the grain — in hip hop, in style, and in general. We've come to expect the unexpected from these talented lads based mostly out of Oakland. They've pushed the boundaries of hip hop as much as anyone, peppering their sonic palate with indie rock, classical, and free-jazz sounds, with results as baffling as they are groovy. So things should get eclectic this weekend when Anticon DJs Jel, Odd Nosdam, The Bomarr Monk, and DJ Sodapop take center stage for a night of deep crates and liberal interpretations of "dance music." With a catalogue of richly layered ambient music, Berlin-based Static (the stage name of producer Hanno Leichtmann) proves that discretion can be a powerful tool in bringing the glitch-ridden IDM scene to the masses. He produces laptop pop that's steeped in nostalgia, a fact perfectly evident on Static's most recent LP Re: Talking About Memories. With moaning vocals and weepy pedal steel, the record demonstrates just as much awareness of shoegazing pop as it does pioneering digital sophistication. Static's engagement alongside the sweet-toothed local poptronic act the Rondo Brothers and the rainy sensibilities of Dark Side of the Cop promise more deep listening action for the cerebrum than big beat inspiration for your backside, but all three acts offer deeply catchy hooks nonetheless.
