Good old Unkle James

For more than two decades, DFA labelmates James Murphy and the Juan Maclean have been road warriors, war buddies, and "grumpy old fucks" (Murphy's words). They've hit trends before their time (Maclean's mid-'90s stint banging out art-damaged android rock in Six Finger Satellite) and labored behind the scenes (Murphy's production as half of remixers du jour the DFA). The duo is now touring again, blowing the whistle on "dance-punk" pretension. Throughout effusive snare-saturated click trax, these two woo the disenchanted with electro-gigolo Italo-disco, fibrous filter house, and bristly post-kraut bustle. Brooklyn streetwear line Triple 5 Soul's current "Soul Sessions Tour" brings a rare local appearance from Detroit's Theo Parrish. The mixmaster/producer is also proprietor of the Sound Signature label, long the soulful DJ's secret weapon for sensual grooves occupying the space between minimal house and techno. He'll never be as well known as the trends he's influenced (from trip hop to Pharrell wearing A Bathing Ape clothing) or the artists to whom he's given an international platform (including DJ Shadow and Radiohead's Thom Yorke). But that doesn't appear to bother James Lavelle, founder of the influential London label Mo' Wax. Whether his DJ appearance here will bring hip hop, electro, techno tunes, or even some ridiculously new super-strain of funk that has yet to be discovered, is anyone's guess.
