Gettin' a leg up on dubstep with Hatcha and Youngsta

Nurtured on Detroit's own proprietary blend of techno and soul, ADULT.(comprising married couple Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus) takes its machine punk-funk to provocative corners. Last year's Gimmie Troublealbum found vocalist Kuperus at her most confident, where what was once a relative whisper became a self-assured scream. S.F.'s Land Shark, an industrial-and-electro referencing act helmed by DJ Lance DeSardi, opens for the Motor City duo on Thursday, Oct. 5, at Mezzanine at 9 p.m. Admission is $13; call 625-8880 or visit www.mezzaninesf.com for more info. A skilled decknician, Philadelphia's Josh Wink is a DJ who has evolved with his musical formats, straddling the edges of house and techno throughout his career. Wink's Profound Sounds series plays with the standard mixed CD concept by including special edits and remixes he's done (the most recent included a breathtaking Radiohead re-work). Most importantly, Wink knows a finely bumpin' groove from those that will keep people holding up the walls. Come prepared to dance on Friday, Oct. 6, at Rx Gallery at 9 p.m. Admission is $12-15. Call 474-7973 or visit www.blasthaus.com for more info. — T.P.

If you read William Gibson's cyberpunk classic Neuromancer, you'll remember Zion, the rasta-resistance space station that echoed with the sounds of dub. But Gibson jumped the gun a bit, since his silver-skied dystopian world would have resonated much more convincingly with dubstep. The South London— born, bassbin-taxing sound has been slow to make its way stateside, and Saturday night's presentation of Hatcha and Youngsta should be the most prominent San Francisco showcase of it to date. These two DJs mixed the fourth installment of the music's gold standard compilation series, Dubstep Allstars. Since dubstep often wades into frequencies much lower than your home system can likely handle, don't sleep on the chance to experience it on the proper speaker array. DJs Hatcha and Youngsta perform on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Club Six (the Darkroom) at 10 p.m. Admission is $10-15; call 863-1221 or visit www.clubsix1.com for more info. Darren Keast

Tuesday nights are ripe for stealing a taste of the weekend ahead — although if you’re looking for clubs that lack attitude or one-sided scenes, that’s become a difficult find. But such a place exists: Chilidog, named after a sex act that this ivory-pure writer can’t even begin to comprehend, happens every Tuesday at the Transfer. DJ the Bearded Lady — who is also the VJ for Moby Dick’s well-packed Friday nights — freestyles in the early ’90s vein (think Company B or Cover Girls), while also throwing down electro-house, obscure disco tunes, ’80s throwbacks, funk, and “dance music for people with a sense of humor,” as he explains. Booze is insanely cheap ($2 for well drinks all night), too. Chilidog goes down every Tuesday at 9 p.m. at the Transfer. Admission is free; call 861-7499 for more info. Brock Keeling
