With a blunt in one hand and a mic in the other, Snoop Dogg stood behind the DJ booth at hip, urban nightspot Loft 11 last week. Dressed in a long-sleeve-and-short-sleeve T-shirt combo and baggy sweatpants, the profile of his face unmistakably canine, his eyes the size of pinpricks, he looked like he had fallen asleep at the gym and woken up 10 minutes before entering the club. The sartorial excellence the d-oh-double-gizzle usually displays was out the door like a hoodrat the morning after. But then, Snoop could wear a wooden bucket and still be pimpin'.
And Snoop was definitely pimpin' this particular night, it being the official S.F. listening party for tha Doggfather's new album, Blue Carpet Treatment. And in his honor, we got dancing girls, tasty barbeque, liquor at full price (no open bar? Beyatch!) and that new Snoop video with B-Real, "Vato," screening repeatedly on the wall. The best part of that song is when Snoop pops it like it's hot and a Batman-style cartoon sound effect says "blaow!" Its message? That it's OK to be a trigger-happy black gangsta in South Central Los Angeles, as long as you got some Latin homies at your back when you be retaliatin' and shit.
There was plenty of time to think about the sociopolitical ramifications of "Vato" in the two hours before Snoop showed up to his own function so much time, in fact, that the sight of local celebrities like Chuy Gomez and Traxamillion became old hat. But when Bigg Snoop appeared to the strains of "Nothin' Like a G Thang," we got giddy like a preschooler on Mike & Ikes. The new album played as Snoop provided obligatory audio commentary and fans passed him dime bags and blunts. Critical listening proved impossible in the loud club environment, but if nothing else, it made for a typically cool Snoop party soundtrack, especially the number with Too Short.
