Good music we found on MySpace

True, MySpace may be a cesspool of Internet predators and bands that never should've grabbed a guitar pick or a drumstick without severe punishment from a firing squad. But, like rummaging through the wares at a discount clothing store for a unique find that works, careful MySpace weeding usually provides worthwhile results. We decided to jump into the muck and unearthed some promising Bay Area artists. Here's a handful of picks:

Aier Sauft

Sounds like: Crazy, industrial-leaning Germans on holiday in '90s-era San FranDisco, fending without a raincoat and having only a vocoder to keep warm as they hunt for drum machines.

Descriptive MySpace page phrase: "The Aier Sauft sound is sometimes regarded as taboo, and carries a feeling of sadness with a twist of absurdity."

Sistas in the Pit

Sounds like: Sweet honey in the rock, and we're certainly not talking about that sappy group. Tough beats from gorgeously hard chicks (with a twist: In a previous life, guitarist Anita "Pa" Lofton was one of San Francisco's most deft house-music DJs).

Descriptive MySpace page phrase: "All black girl rock & roll band!"

Buddy Leezle

Sounds like: A world-wise rapper who can't really decide his MO. Is he more like a Parisian electro-pop idol or a sleazy Russian spy? Thankfully, Leezle is stylistically adept at dabbling in both zones. Europe would totally love him.

Descriptive MySpace page phrase: "The key to bringing sexy back is right behind my zipper."

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
