STANFORD
221 University (at Emerson), Palo Alto, (650) 324-3700, www.stanfordtheatre.org. $6. This handsomely restored neighborhood palace usually (but not always) screens pre-1960 Hollywood fare in the best available prints, with excellent projection. A Twentieth Century Fox series continues. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY: Grumpy Monty Wooley's life is dusted up by housekeeper Gracie Fields in the comedy Molly and Me (Lewis Seiler, 1945; 7:30 p.m. ), and brilliant conductor Rex Harrison is bedeviled by jealousy in Preston Sturges' perfect pitch black comedy Unfaithfully Yours (1948; 5:35, 9 p.m. ).

FRIDAY: Alice Faye, Don Ameche and above all Carmen Miranda spend That Night in Rio (Irving Cummings, 1941; 7:30 p.m. ), screening in a rare Technicolor print. Danny Kaye plays two parts and woos Gene Tierney in both, On the Riviera (Walter Lang, 1951; 5:50, 9:10 p.m. ).

SATURDAY & SUNDAY: Fox ventures into that old widescreen religion in The Robe (Henry Koster, 1953; 3:10, 7:30 p.m. ). Yul Brynner programs Ingrid Bergman to be the Czaress of all Russia (or her exiled heir, anyway) in Anastasia (Anatole Litvak, 1956; 5:35, 9:55 p.m. ).

YERBA BUENA CENTER FOR THE ARTS
701 Mission (at Third Street, in Yerba Buena Gardens), 978-2787, www.ybca.org. $8 save as noted. This venue's Screening Room is a home for film and video programs of all sorts.

WEDNESDAY (Dec. 6): Marlow's Cabinet of Curiosities Revisited offers 90 minutes of surreal shorts courtesy of archivist Jonathan Marlow 7:30 p.m.

FRIDAY (Dec. 8): A multimedia concert and film event, the Brutal Sound Effects Festival promises to "numb your toes, and mush your thoughts until they run streaming grey fluids out of your nose." Bands featured include the Psichologico Tramas, Core of the Coal Man, and the Beandip Troubadours 7:30 p.m.

SUNDAY (Dec. 10): The late experimental filmmaker Nathaniel Dorsky's final film, Song and Solitude (2006), screens with earlier work in its local debut 7:30 p.m.
