Getting Spank'd

He's both a vocalist for Oakland-based electro-rap outfit Gravy Train!!!! and author of the sublime zine Fag School, but Brontez also hits the DJ decks pretty goddamn hard. You can hear him spin at the first installment of "Fist," a new monthly littered with pop and rock sounds; homosexual-heavy porn; live performances by Jenna Riot & Brat Attack; a bushel of other capable DJs, including El Rio faves Pink Lightning and Trouble; and more slutty, unkempt, queer hipsters than you can shake a bar of Ivory antibacterial soap at. Fist starts this Wednesday, Dec. 6 (and every first Wednesday of the month), at El Rio at 9 p.m. Admission is $5-10; call 282-3325 or visit www.elriosf.com for more info. Brock Keeling

Los Angeles radio station Power 106 plays the biggest hits in hip hop and R&B. For the past 14 years, though, DJ Richard Vission has provided a weekly respite from normal programming with his Saturday-night dance-mix show "Power Tools." He's a versatile disc jockey who dabbles in many flavors, from remixed rock and hip hop to house and techno, but keeps the beats pounding hard for dancers with the energy to match. This particular party, which also features a fashion show, gets underway on Saturday, Dec. 9, at Ruby Skye at 8 p.m. Admission is $15; call 693-0777 or visit www.rubyskye.com for more info. Baltimore had a big year in the hipster spotlight, between the edgy HBO drama The Wire and the freaky-fly musical outfit Spank Rock (helmed by MC Spank Rock and producer XXXhange). The attention is well deserved on both counts, but Spank Rock is much more fun — the group comes fully loaded with risqué rhymes and beats to make motorbooties out of ordinary bodies. Get lost in irresistibly naughty tunes on Monday, Dec. 11, at Mighty at 10 p.m. Admission is $15 adv.; call 762-0151 or visit www.mighty119.com for more info. — T.P.
