Hiphop gets back to its Roots

The "Save Darfur Tour" was conceived by Alexipharmic, a Los Angeles rapper who donates half of his earnings from music to charity. More specifically, he raises funds for nonprofits who promote awareness about the continued genocide in Sudan. The local stop of his production, which gives all of its proceeds to this cause, is headlined by fellow Angelenos the Visionaries, the multicultural group (DJs Key Kool and Rhettmatic along with rappers LMNO, Lord Zen, Dannu, and 2Mex) known for incisive social commentary and bright beats. They'll perform on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the Elbo Room at 9 p.m. Admission is $10 (donation); call 552-7788 or visit www.elbo.com for more info. Tamara Palmer

In 2001 the U.K.'s Stanton Warriors delivered a remix of Basement Jaxx's "Where's Your Head At?" that one-upped the song's already irrepressible body jackin'. The Warriors' staccato soul sublimation was pure E-lation as the duo flirted with 2-Step Garage — a far-flung offshoot of hiccup-ridden, high-velocity house. Well, as that genre didn't end up changing the cosmos, the producers transitioned into more pneumatic nu breaks. The result is Stanton Warriors' latest mix, FabricLive.30, which welds Kerri Chandler with Spank Rock, the tech-pecks of Claude VonStroke with hip-hop pocks, plus the booty bass of Splack Pack and much more. Check out these party agitators on Friday, Feb. 2, at 1015 at 10 p.m. Admission is $15-20; call 431-1200 or visit www.1015.com for more info. Tony Ware

The average house DJ/producer does not get Sting and Madonna's attention — not to mention their remix commissions — nor do they split time with club residencies in both New York and Miami. But that's all in a day's work to Victor Calderone. Nothing less than a supercharged evening of power house music — tribal, drum-laden vocal anthems leaving little space to breathe or stop moving — are to be expected once under the musical control of a man who once produced a massive party called "Caligula" in celebration of the ultimate Roman orgy. A comparatively smaller slice of hedonism awaits on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Ruby Skye at 8 p.m. Admission is $15; call 693-0777 or visit www.rubyskye.com for more info. — T.P.

The Roots remain one of the few hip-hop acts that actually make live instrumentation sound good, due in large part to their in-house trap kit kingpin, ?uestlove. The band also continues to experiment and innovate both in the studio (last year's Game Theory put the Philly crew back on top) and onstage. Black Thought is one of the most underrated emcees in the game, his freestyles as effortless and witty as his written rhymes. With such a hefty ticket price, the legendary act must continue to bring its all during back-to-back S.F. appearances. Come find out if they're up to the task on Wednesday, Feb. 7, and Thursday, Feb. 8, at the Fillmore at 8 p.m. Admission is $35; call 346-6000 or visit www.thefillmore.com for more info.
