MSTRKRFT whip up frosty electro milkshakes

Los Angeles' Guns N' Bombs can be viewed as a reaction to austere minimal techno or simply as club rats seeking new ways to express surplus energy. GN'B — Johnny Love and Ima Robot's Filip Turbotito — has released the Nothing Is Getting Us Anywhere 10-inch on scorching French label Kitsuné Maison; like many of their labelmates, the duo specializes in sleazy, crunchy electro-house that aims to both pulverize and swivel your pelvis. It's new rave with a sandpapery makeover, as gritty as it is fun. The gruff exterior and raucous energy ought to lure rockers and daft punks onto the dance floor when GN'B performs at "Loaded" on Friday, March 2, at Rickshaw Stop at 10 p.m. Admission is $10; call 861-2011 or visit www.rickshawstop.com for more info. I can't say I'm pleased that Death From Above 1979 croaked. The once defiant dance-punk duo fully grasped the grit in their genre, showing voluminous ferocity both live and on disc. But the dissolution of one pair's popularity has helped cement another's. DFA 1979 bassist Jesse F. Keeler is now fully immersed in ebullient electro as one half of MSTRKRFT. Together with producer Al-P, they remix the big buzz tracks and rally original, techno-tweaked crowd pleasers. Check the video for their ‘06 hit "Easy Love" and you'll dream of a day when DJ booths dispense frosty milkshakes on sexy secretaries. MSTRKRFT performs with John Digweed on Friday, March 2, at Ruby Skye at 9 p.m. Admission is $25; call 693-0777or visit www.rubyskye.com for more info. Jennifer Maerz

U.K. DJ Hyper brings a punk spirit to his breakbeat-laden sets and original tunes (such as his smart dance-floor update of Adam and the Ants' "Antmusic"). And as proprietor of record promo company Waxworks, he has the keys to the kingdom of the newest songs from many top labels. He'll share his exclusive wares when he spins at "Behind the Green Door," a party to benefit the fifth year of construction of the "Opulent Temple" at Burning Man on Friday, March 2, at Mighty at 10 p.m. Admission is $10-20; call 762-0151 or visit www.opulenttemple.org for more info. Dr Das (formerly of U.K. group Asian Dub Foundation) crafts funky, propulsive tunes firmly on the pulse of current technology. His secrets include his knowledge of the bass guitar, which he played in ADF, and the Sunadamala, a programmable electronic instrument that generates the classically Indian dance groove known as raga and allows for its modern manipulation. Das performs at "Worldly," one of two parties happening simultaneously on Friday, March 2, at 1015 at 10 p.m. Admission is $10 (before 10:30); call 431-1200 or visit www.1015.com for more info. — T.P.
