Shed excess pop with OK Go's power calisthenics

The guys in OK Go are coming off a Grammy win for their video "Here It Goes Again," a classic moment in the history of goofy music videos that shows them executing truly ridiculous dance routines on a series of treadmills. The clip has been watched an estimated 15 million times online. And yet, more people probably saw the band in those stupid J.C. Penney's back-to-school ads. That's not the coolest way to get exposure, which is kind of sad because OK Go's album Oh No should be backlash-proof; it's an energetic blast of hook-filled power-pop abandon. It's probably safer to admit you like Silversun Pickups, though. Their melancholy fuzz-pop may inspire Smashing Pumpkins flashbacks, but at least they've never shilled for a department store. Local electro-stalwarts Eats Tapes have been carting a flotilla of analog junk around the noise scene for years, recreating illicit robot dance parties that might have happened in the basement of IBM's research labs in 1962. Dos Mutantes, their latest on Tigerbeat6, squelches out a hit parade of sugary bangers: It's a complex nexus of scratchy drum machines, damaged synths, and Nintendo-goofy bleeps and urps. The disc forces anyone in listening distance to drop everything and spazz out like a happy mongoloid at an android rave.
