Tap that ass on the turntables: Spank Rock returns

Tyrese Gibson isn't necessarily crazy. But he does think he's two people: R&B pinup/singer Tyrese and rapper Black Ty, both of whom star in the recent double album Alter Ego. Actually, he's three dudes, if you catch him in wannabe movie-star mode, having played the lead in Baby Boy and appearing in other films like Waist Deep and Four Brothers. Sexual R&B for the ladies is still his forte, though, and it should be fun watching him flaunt his dualities live in a rare local show on Friday, May 18, at Mezzanine at 9 p.m. Admission is $35-40; call 625-8880 or visit www.mezzaninesf.com for more info. Doc Martin launched his DJ career in San Francisco before moving to Los Angeles at the dawn of the rave era. Since his relocation down south he's become one of America's most in-demand house music DJs overseas. Martin's busy schedule prevented him from producing many of his own tunes, though, until he formed Sublevel with singer Lillia a few years ago. The duo has since released a number of deliciously languid boogie singles evocative of the disco era. Sublevel performs live on Friday, May 18, at Ruby Skye at 9 p.m. Admission is $15; call 693-0777 or visit www.rubyskye.com for more info. — T.P.

Chris Devlin and Ronnie Darko are the DJs behind Baltimore's booty-rap outfit Spank Rock. They're also the selectors behind the new mixed compilation FABRICLIVE.33 for London nightclub Fabric. The pair's CD is the series' most playful installment in the past year, with a set list that includes songs by artists ranging from Yes to Kurtis Blow and Tangerine Dream. Devlin and Darko will represent Spank Rock and forge a thread between prog rock, electro-disco, and Dirty South hip hop with a DJ set on Saturday, May 19, at Rx Gallery at 9 p.m. Admission is $12-15; call 474-7973 or visit www.blasthaus.com for more info. — T.P.
