WEDNESDAY & THURSDAY: Depp or alive? Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (Gore Verbinski, 2007) 1, 4:30, 8 p.m. On the Balboa's second screen, the very funny police parody Hot Fuzz (Edgar Wright, U.K., 2006; 4:15, 9:05 p.m. ) billed with a police drama of a different sort, The Lives of Others (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, Germany, 2006; 1:45, 6:30 p.m. ).

429 Castro (near Market), 621-6120 and www.thecastrotheatre.com. $10 save as noted. Short-run rep in a spectacular 1922 Greco-Roman-themed palace designed by Timothy L. Pflueger. Evening intermissions feature David Hegarty on the Mighty Wurlitzer.

WEDNESDAY: A Clint Eastwood series screens two San Francisco-set crime dramas, Don Siegel's vigilante force Dirty Harry (1971; 2:50, 7 p.m. ) and the pro con Escape from Alcatraz (Siegel, 1979; 4:50, 9 p.m. ).

THURSDAY: Commemorate Clint's 77th birthday (right here in San Francisco) with his first film as director, Play Misty for Me (1971; 7 p.m. ), and the subtly gay-themed Thunderbolt and Lightfoot (Michael Cimino, 1974; 4:45, 9 p.m. ).

FRIDAY: A Bernard Herrmann series celebrates the work of the great film composer and opens with the memorably scored Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock, 1958; 2:30, 7 p.m. ) and Brian DePalma's knock-off of same, Obsession (1976; 5, 9:30 p.m. ). "Herrmann's overpowering score haunts the proceedings like a phantom limb."

SATURDAY: Herrmann meets myth in a triple bill of Ray Harryhausen special effects classics, The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (Nathan Juran, 1958; 3:20, 9:05 p.m. ), Mysterious Island (Cy Endfield, 1961; 5:05 p.m. ) and Jason and the Argonauts (Don Chaffey, 1963; 1:15, 7 p.m. ).

SUNDAY: Herrmann's first and his last (give or take a credit or two): Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941; 2:30, 9 p.m. ) and Taxi Driver (Martin Scorsese, 1976; 4:50, 9:20 p.m. ). Both films are by young tyros on the way up, pushed existing technology to the limit, had censorship problems and deal with isolated men living in their own realities.

MONDAY: Closed.

TUESDAY: Herrmann scored two s.f. classics, Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth (Henry Levin, 1959; 2:05, 6:45 p.m. ) and Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 (François Truffaut, U.K., 1966; 4:30, 9:10 p.m. ).

CERRITO SPEAKEASY
285 Ninth St. (at Folsom), www.cerritospeakeasy.com. This recently restored second-run theater, a sister theater to Oakland's Parkway, features "Cerrito Classics," a different revival every weekend.

THURSDAY (May 31): Three episodes of the cult TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer: the sing-along episode Once More with Feeling (Joss Whedon, 2001) plus two Spring Prom-themed episodes, Out of Mind, Out of Sight (Reza Badiyi, 1997) and The Prom (David Solomon, 1999). Prom clothes encouraged! $6 9:15 p.m.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY (June 2 & 3): This week's unmissable classic is the Astaire-Rogers musical Top Hat (Mark Sandrich, 1935) Sat 6 p.m., Sun 5 p.m.
