Vernon, France's Wax Tailor (aka JC Le Saout) was the "Official DJ and Audio Curator" of the recent Cannes Film Festival. The honor was remarkable since he favors abstract soul over mainstream pop in his DJing and original productions. Wax Tailor and his band perform selections from the recently released album Hope & Sorrow, a pastiche of chunky beats, obscure samples, singing, and even poetry (one of the album's mobilizing standouts, "We Be," features spoken word sensation Ursula Rucker). Tailor's first live American tour stops here on Friday, June 8, at Mighty at 9 p.m. Admission is $10; call 762-0151 or visit www.mighty119.com for more info. Tamara Palmer
While Brazilian sextet Cansei De Ser Sexy ("tired of being sexy") has a ditty called "Meeting Paris Hilton," the group is way too cool to actually be starfuckers. Instead it offers a saucy mélange of electro-pop jangle and sweet punk sneer. CSS headlines a special BFD afterparty, other highlights of which include Los Angeles alt-rapper Busdriver and a DJ set from Nebraskan dance-rockers the Faint. Together, this lineup just might be a big effin' deal on Saturday, June 9, at Mezzanine at 9 p.m. Admission is $12 adv.; call 625-8880 or visit www.mezzaninesf.com for more info. T.P.
As one-half of the now defunct Rockers Hi Fi, Birmingham, England's Glyn "Bigga" Bush was a heavy influence on the cross-pollination of Jamaican dub with British electronic dance music in the '90s. Now, under the aliases BiggaBush and Lightning Head, he continues to push this exploration into tribal hybrids of Ethiopian and Nigerian funk crossed with instantly memorable melodies and airy ambient sounds. Expect BiggaBush to come with brand-new tunes and original rockers for "Dub Mission" on Sunday, June 10, at Elbo Room at 9 p.m. Admission is $6; call 552-7788 or visit www.elbo.com for more info.
