New Worlds

A quick glance at Jeremy Kidd's disorienting photographs of familiar cityscapes looks like they were simply snapped on location, transferred to a computer, and then pushed and pulled to within an inch of their lives. But he's hardly traded the site for the studio. He starts by taking hundreds of pictures of a particular scene, from different angles at different times of day, often using long exposures, capturing a comprehensive look at his subject. Then he digitally tweaks the results in a host of ways -- splicing, repeating, expanding, minimizing -- and arranges them into one giant image, producing schizophrenic photo collages of icons like New York's Chrysler Building and the Brooklyn Bridge. Sometimes he goes delightfully haywire, as with Exploratorium 2, in which he reassembles the pillars at the Palace of Fine Arts into a mythic, threatening jumble that resembles a Stonehenge from an otherworldly multistar planet.
