The temporary location of the art gallery Southern Exposure will soon become the permanent, expanded home of Mission Pie bakery, and to ease the transition, the powerhouse art group is letting artist Nathan Lynch move a pie-delivery service into the space. Despite the head-shaking conceptual art that regularly whiplashes out of SOEX, we're well aware this has the scent of a hoax, like when the small-town "McSweeney’s family" offered to maintain McSweeney's financially struggling Web site and reporters went nuts with their Staggering Generosity headlines (as if the site cost more than, like, $8 to update). But this is definitely true. At least, we think it is. Maybe it's not. Anyway, we won't know the full extent of their wit for a while (keep an eye on the corrections page in this paper), but pies will indeed be ushering forth from the location. To get one, call 282-4PIE, Tuesday through Saturday between 3 and 6 p.m. Today, Mission Pie, currently housed in a tiny storefront next to SOEX, will be helping Lynch and hopefully a grandmother or two run a Pie Baking Contest, which is open to everyone (who can make a pie). After this bit of nourishing art, Southern Exposure returns to the head-scratching stuff in a big way on Aug. 2, when artist Michael Swaine, whose exhibit of braille T-shirts called "A Plea for Tenderness" opens July 24, takes visitors on a blindfolded walk around the neighborhood.
