All '80s all week: Chromeo and "Prince vs. Michael Jackson"

S.F. DJs Dave Paul and Jeff Harris recently received the sincerest form of flattery when their popular monthly "Prince vs. Michael Jackson" party was paid tribute to by East Bay promoters Oakland Reggae. The latter threw a "Prince vs. Too Short" night in the first week of July. But the plan is for club domination outside our little region — Paul and Harris have been busy taking their influential event on the road. The concept is too good to be kept a local secret: DJs pit the music of the notorious icons (and their various protégés) against one another, and the clubgoers determine the winner of the battle. "Prince vs. Michael: The Extended Mix" throws down an eight-hour face-off on Saturday, July 21, at Madrone Lounge at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 (free before 9 p.m.); call 241-0202 or visit www.madronelounge.com for more info. — T.P.

Survey the friction ridges of From Here We Go Sublime — the full-length debut of the Field, aka Sweden's Axel Willner — and layers of lustrous whorls are revealed. Diffused at the edges, a locus of clammy pressure at the apex, these fingerprints of flutter and 4/4 beats establish similar patterns, but remain blissfully distinct. Willner loops shutterbuggin' guitar tracers and octave-split syllables into interlaced drifts. Experience a buffet of butterfly kisses and hissy builds as the Field appears along with Broker/Dealer at Rx Gallery on Saturday, July 21, at 9 p.m. Admission is $10-15; call 474-7973 or visit www.blasthaus.com for more info. — T.W.

The jam gigolos in Montreal's Chromeo aim to convince daft punks that the best butts to shake in a club aren't stale Parliaments. Rockin' pliant synth-funk and pixilated Roger Troutman-esque vocoder hooks, the duo of Dave 1 and P-Thugg woos the tenderonis with the pop-lockin' digi-drums, boot-knockin' bass slaps, and fizzy guitar streaks. Touring on the group's poptastic sophomore release, Fancy Footwork, Chromeo lays the partner-friendly grooves as thick as Nell Carter, and Mr. T's mohawk pities the wall-huggin' fools tonight. Chromeo appears with Flosstradamus, Codebreaker, Jefrodisiac, and Ritchie Panic at Mezzanine on Monday, July 23, at 9 p.m. Admission is free with an RSVP to http://going.com/chromeo; call 625-8880 or visit www.mezzaninesf.com for more info. — T.W.

Z-Trip is so well embraced by the Bay Area that we wish we could claim him as our very own DJ. But the Southern California resident with the golden ability to credibly mix rock and hip hop plays here frequently enough that we can pretend he's a townie. He recently created an original soundtrack for the videogame All-Pro Football 2K8, and will celebrate its release with a DJ set accompanied by live MCing from three of the album's collaborators — local heroes Gift of Gab and Lateef and L.A.'s Aceyalone. DJ Phoreyz opens the show, which takes place on Tuesday, June 24, at the Independent at 9 p.m. Admission is $25; call 771-1421 or visit www.theindependentsf.com for more info. — T.P.
