Ruth Wilson Gilmore, author of Golden Gulag: Prisons, Surplus, Crisis, and Opposition in Globalizing California explores California's 450 percent increase in incarcerated persons in the last three decades or so, and she also does that traditional muckraker dance: She follows the money to show who has a stake in building even more prison beds. Our golden state is still spending more money on lockups than on education, and the writer's no fan of that either.
