So Edgy!

Punk just isn't enough for some people: at the Edgetone New Music Summit, musicians take improvised and experimental music to ear-scarring heights. No instrument is safe, from tubas to electronics of any description, with traditional folkloric instruments coming in for special new uses (we're thinking of Kioku's Wynn Yamami, whose East and Southeast Asian percussion respects tradition, but doesn't stick to it). Jazz is also a major inspiration here, but not Duke Ellington, really. Saxophonist Jim Ryan is a master of "free jazz," and he performs not songs, but "noise" from his trio's new CD FE3, according to the event's Web site. Bring. Ear. Plugs.
