Jam on the return of Brooklyn's Newcleus

They're from opposite coasts, but Brooklyn's Newcleus (best known for the '80s club hit "Jam on It") and L.A.'s Egyptian Lover (who penned "Egypt, Egypt" for that same decade) explore similar musical territory, fusing Kraftwerk robotics with hip-hop rhyme schemes. More than 20 years have passed since their heyday, but the artists' heavily vocoded and mechanically funky aesthetic are still referenced by today's stars of techno, house, rap, and rock. Celebrate retro futurism when Egyptian Lover and Newcleus perform live; the latter is touring here with a full band. As part of the world-famous crew Beat Junkies, local Shortkut and his SoCal colleague Rhettmatic both have a background in competitive DJ battles. (Shortkut was even part of the internationally renowned Invisibl Skratch Piklz, who were famously asked to stop competing and give others a chance.) But the duo has more than flawless technique at its fingertips. Primarily known in the hip-hop world, these DJs are students of music, with ample record collections to show for it.
