Joan Rivers’ accomplishments seem to have no end. A quick scout around the iconic comedian’s Web site, www.joanrivers.com, reveals a dizzying deluge of skills and talents, from lecturing and writing books to designing jewelry and developing her own line of cosmetics. “I’m the luckiest woman on the planet!” Rivers gushes in a statement on her homepage. But in the universe of her new autobiographical show, currently receiving a series of workshop performances in advance of a fully produced world premiere, those words couldn’t be further from the truth. Set in a theater dressing room just before the biggest award ceremony in Hollywood’s annual calendar, The Joan Rivers Theatre Project revolves around Rivers’ attempt to gather together her wits in time for her big entrance under the lights as her life crumbles around her. From the network’s obstreperous new entertainment chief breathing down her neck, to the disappointing catered cheese platter left to go moldy amid the powder puffs and good-luck cards from well-wishers, Rivers wonders if her life could get any worse. In addition to performing, Rivers presides over talk-back sessions after each performance to help her hone an already highly developed sense of self-deprecating humor.
