How to define San Francisco style? Well, first of all, don't believe the naysayers who talk trash about our meager fashion lexicon. Truth be told, we've got all manner of fashionistas, from the Dior-laden Marina wench to the scuzzy-chic Mission hipster who's more likely to don tattered duds from Grandma's closet than Prada or Chanel. The city's manifold mix of sartorial habits and anything-goes spirit trickle over into San Francisco Fashion Week. Since 2004, it's allowed consumers and tastemakers to convene and local designers to get some exposure and peddle their wares. The five-day event includes a passel of fashion shows and events, featuring everything from pie-in-the-sky couture to utilitarian streetwear. Flamboyant trendsetters can delight in theater costumes designed by Isaac Mizrahi, while ladies on the hunt for formal attire can bid on little black dresses at a silent auction sponsored by the San Francisco Opera. There's even an Emerging Designer show, in which recent fashion-school grads show their moxie. Even if you can't afford stuff straight off the catwalk, it's a good idea to check out the Fashion Week Boutique, filled with handbags, jewelry, accessories, and one-of-a-kind clothing. It’s sponsored by Appel & Frank, who specialize in coordinating shopping events for avid mall-haters. If feasting your eyes on spring 2008 collections isn't enough, drop in on one of the week's many workshops. Catwalk Choreography and Modeling Boot Camp are sure to be audience favorites.
