Good Folks

Gram Parsons, Sweetheart of the Rodeo-era Byrds, and Bob Dylan in a Nashville Skyline mood hang around the music of Donovan Quinn. As part of the strong local folk-rock scene, Quinn -- who's been involved with Skygreen Leopards, Verdure, and other neo-hippie groups -- brings some country pain to a genre that can get a little flighty. The result is complex layers of slide guitars, organ, and a rhythm guitar that makes us think improbably of Waylon Jennings. Quinn's voice can easily be mistaken for a young Dylan, but Jennings' influences are evident there, too, in straightforward but soulful lyrics. Jean Marie and Jeffrey Manson join Quinn in opening for Chinatown Bakeries, who release an EP tonight.
