Summer Lovin'

It must be said: the Summer of Love had no corporate sponsors. No airlines, no bottled water companies, no television stations or "megastores" wanted to paste their brand identities on hippies in 1967. But the 40th Anniversary Summer of Love Free Concert has all these and more, so some may cry "sellout!" Others would say, perhaps, that in addition to expected appearances by Moby Grape, Canned Heat, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage, the sponsor-getting organizers also offer a surprising array of poets, activists, and representatives of Native American tribes. Sure, Wavy Gravy will be there, but so will some Cockettes and David E. Smith, founder of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic. As Chet Helms said of the 30th Anniversary event, the important part is that in the spirit of the Sixties, "this event will be free and ungated."
